What the engine management light actually means
The amber engine symbol means the engine control unit has logged a fault code because a sensor reading fell outside the range the manufacturer programmed in. It is not a single fault and it is not a countdown to a breakdown. It can be something as small as a loose fuel cap upsetting the evaporative system, or as serious as a failing turbo. The only way to know is to read the code with a scanner — everything else is guesswork.
Steady amber light versus flashing light
A steady amber light means a fault is stored and the car may be running in a reduced state. Drive gently and get it read within a few days. A flashing engine light is different and it is the one people ignore: it usually means a live misfire dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, which can destroy a catalytic converter in a matter of miles. Pull over when it is safe, and do not keep driving. A red light of any kind means stop now.
The most common UK causes, in the order we actually find them
Over a normal workshop week the usual suspects are: an oxygen or lambda sensor past its life, a failing ignition coil or spark plug causing a misfire, an EGR valve clogged with soot on a diesel, a partly blocked DPF on a diesel doing short trips, a split boost or vacuum hose, a MAF sensor reading high or low, a thermostat stuck open, or a loose or perished fuel filler cap. Mass-market cars over eight years old skew heavily towards coils, lambda sensors and EGR.
Can you drive with the engine management light on?
With a steady light and the car driving normally — no loss of power, no odd noise, no smoke, temperature normal — it is generally safe to drive carefully to a garage. Stop driving if the light is flashing, the car has gone into limp mode and will not rev past about 3,000rpm, there is white or heavy black smoke, the temperature gauge is climbing, or you have lost power steering or braking assistance. Limp mode is the car protecting itself; pushing on through it turns a sensor bill into an engine bill.

Diagnostics at an independent garage: £40–£90, usually credited against the repair. Ignition coil and plugs: £120–£300. Lambda or oxygen sensor: £120–£280 fitted. MAF sensor: £90–£220. Will it fail the MOT?
Yes. Since 2018 an illuminated engine management light (MIL) is a major defect and an automatic MOT failure, along with any illuminated airbag, ABS, brake, power steering or oil pressure warning light. Clearing the code the morning of the test does not work either — the tester checks the bulb illuminates on ignition and goes out, and a cleared code usually returns within a few miles. Fix the underlying fault before booking.
Reading the code yourself
A basic OBD2 scanner plugs into the port under the dash on any car from 2001 petrol or 2004 diesel onwards and gives you the code in under a minute. Knowing you are chasing a P0420 rather than a P0299 before you ring a garage is worth having, and it stops you being sold a catalytic converter you do not need. The code is a starting point, not a diagnosis — P0171 means the engine is running lean, not that any particular part has failed.
What to do next
Check the obvious first: fuel cap tight, oil and coolant levels correct, no obviously split pipe under the bonnet. Note whether the light came on hot or cold, under load or idling, and whether the car feels different — that history saves a mechanic a lot of time. Then get the code read.
