White smoke from exhaust on startup — UK guide

A small puff of white "smoke" on a cold morning that clears within 30 seconds is almost always condensation — water vapour that built up in the exhaust overnight. But thick, persistent white smoke is a different story.

Condensation vs head gasket

**Condensation (harmless):** - Thin, wispy, clears in 30–60 seconds - Worse in winter or after the car has sat for days - No smell **Head gasket / coolant burn (serious):** - Thick, sweet-smelling white smoke that continues for minutes - Coolant level drops with no visible leak - Mayonnaise-like residue under the oil filler cap - Engine overheats or runs hot

What causes head gasket failure on UK cars

- Overheating (often from a stuck thermostat or failed water pump) - Age and high mileage (140,000+ on most engines) - Specific weak engines: BMW N47, VW 1.4 TSI, Ford 1.6 EcoBoost (wet belt), Mini N14

Typical UK costs

- Diagnostic with sniffer test: £50–£90 - Replacement thermostat: £180–£300 - Water pump: £350–£700 - Head gasket repair: £900–£2,500 depending on engine

How long can I drive with a head gasket leak? — Don't. A small coolant leak into the cylinders becomes a cracked head (£2,500+) within days. Get it checked immediately.

Can a head gasket "sealer" fix it? — Sealers can work as a short-term fix for small leaks, but they often block the heater matrix and radiator. Use only as a get-you-home solution.
