Bob has 32 years on the tools and sees this warning multiple times a week. Nine times out of ten it's a mechanical or sensor fault the ECU has detected, not a failed engine. The ECU has deliberately capped power (usually to around 40–60% of normal, sometimes to a fixed 3,000 RPM ceiling) to protect the engine from further damage while it waits for you to book it in. The cost of fixing it ranges from £30 (a split boost pipe) to £1,400+ (a failed turbo or DPF), so the diagnostic call is where you either save £1,000 or waste it.

What 'reduced engine power' actually means

When the ECU triggers reduced power / limp mode, it's reading a sensor or output value that's outside safe operating range and choosing to limit fuel delivery, boost pressure, or throttle opening rather than let the engine damage itself.
