Electric power steering fault — UK causes & cost

When the electric power steering (EPS) warning light comes on, the assistance often cuts out completely — leaving you with very heavy steering, especially at low speed. It's a safety-critical fault that needs immediate attention.

Common UK causes

1. **Low battery voltage** — EPS needs >12.2V to operate. Old battery? Replace first. 2. **Failed EPS column motor** — common on Vauxhall Corsa D, Astra H, Zafira B (subject to a previous recall) 3. **Torque sensor fault** — the sensor that detects how hard you're turning the wheel 4. **Loose battery terminals or earth strap** 5. **Software glitch needing dealer reflash**

Quick check

Try restarting the car after 5 minutes off. If the EPS works normally for a while then fails again, it's heat-related — usually a failing column motor.

UK costs

- New battery: £85–£280 - EPS column motor (reconditioned + fitted): £350–£700 - New OEM EPS column: £900–£1,500 fitted - Software reflash at main dealer: £80–£180

Is it safe to drive without power steering? — Mechanically yes, but parking and low-speed manoeuvres are very heavy. Avoid motorways — at speed the steering is fine, but if you stop suddenly you'll struggle.

Will the Corsa D EPS recall still apply? — It expired in 2021 in the UK. Most reconditioned units now come with a 2-year warranty for around £400 fitted.
