EGR valve symptoms — UK diesel & petrol guide

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve recycles a small amount of exhaust gas back into the engine to lower combustion temperatures and cut NOx emissions. Over time — especially on UK diesels driven mostly in town — soot and oil mist clog the valve, and it sticks either open or closed.

7 classic EGR symptoms

1. Rough or lumpy idle, especially when warm 2. Engine management light with codes P0400, P0401, P0402, P0403, P0404 or P0405 3. Hesitation or flat spots between 1,500–2,500 rpm 4. Increased fuel consumption (5–15% worse MPG) 5. Black smoke from the exhaust on acceleration 6. Car drops into limp mode after a long motorway drive 7. Strong diesel or fuel smell at idle

Clean or replace?

Many UK diesels (Ford 1.6/2.0 TDCi, VW 1.9/2.0 TDI, BMW 2.0d, Vauxhall 1.7 CDTi) respond well to a professional EGR clean. If the valve still operates electrically, cleaning typically restores normal driving for 30,000–50,000 miles. If the valve is mechanically seized or the stepper motor has failed, replacement is the only option. - Professional EGR clean: £180–£350 - EGR valve replacement (aftermarket): £280–£500 fitted - Genuine OEM EGR: £450–£700 fitted

Why EGR delete is a bad idea

Removing or "blanking" the EGR valve is illegal for road use in the UK and an MOT failure since 2018. It also voids any remaining warranty and reduces your car's resale value significantly.

How long does an EGR clean take? — 2–4 hours on most cars. Some engines (e.g. Ford 2.0 TDCi) need the inlet manifold removed, which takes longer.

Can I clean the EGR myself? — On a few engines yes, but most are buried under the inlet manifold and require special tools. DIY attempts often end with snapped bolts and a much larger bill.

What MPG improvement should I expect? — A properly cleaned or replaced EGR usually restores 5–10% of lost MPG within a tank or two of driving.
