A glowing DPF (diesel particulate filter) light usually means soot has built up faster than your engine can burn it off. On most UK diesels (VW, Ford, BMW, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroën) this happens because the car spends too long on short stop-start journeys, never reaching the temperature needed for a passive regeneration.
What does the DPF light actually mean?
The DPF light tells you the filter is around 70–80% full of trapped soot. At this stage it's still safe to drive, but you need to help the car complete a **regeneration** — a process where the soot is burned off into harmless ash. If you ignore it, the light usually goes solid amber, then red, then puts the car into limp mode.
Common causes on UK diesels
- Too many short urban journeys (school runs, town driving) - Faulty differential pressure sensor - EGR valve stuck open or carboned up - Low fuel level (most cars need >¼ tank to start a regen) - Wrong engine oil (must be low-SAPS, e.g. C2/C3) - Failed glow plugs or fuel injectors - Turbo or boost leak preventing high exhaust temperatures
How to clear a DPF light yourself
If the light has just come on and the car is otherwise driving normally, try a **motorway regen**: drive at 50–70 mph in 3rd or 4th gear (around 2,500–3,000 rpm) for 20–30 minutes on a dual carriageway or motorway. Make sure you have at least a quarter tank of diesel. In most cases the light will go out within 15–20 minutes.
Typical UK repair costs
- Forced (active) regen at a garage: £80–£150 - DPF off-car clean: £250–£450 - New differential pressure sensor: £90–£180 fitted - EGR clean: £180–£350 - Replacement OEM DPF: £900–£2,200 fitted - Aftermarket DPF: £450–£900 fitted DPF removal or "delete" is **illegal** for road use in the UK — it's an automatic MOT failure since 2014.
Is it safe to drive with the DPF light on? — Yes, with a single amber light. If you see additional warnings (engine management light, glow-plug light flashing, limp mode), stop driving and book a diagnostic.
How much does a new DPF cost in the UK? — Genuine OEM DPFs are £900–£2,200 fitted. A professional DPF clean is usually £250–£450 and works on 80% of partially blocked filters.
Can I remove the DPF? — No — DPF removal is illegal for road use and an instant MOT failure. Cleaning or replacement are the only legal options.
