Car won't start — just clicks rapidly (UK fix)

A rapid "tick-tick-tick" when you turn the key (or press start) means the starter motor solenoid is trying to engage but doesn't have enough power to spin the engine. 9 times out of 10 it's a flat or failing battery.

The 60-second test

Switch on the headlights with the engine off. Try to start the car: - **Headlights go dim or off** → battery is flat or failing - **Headlights stay bright, single loud clunk** → starter motor solenoid - **Headlights stay bright, rapid clicks** → loose or corroded battery terminals - **Nothing at all, no lights** → battery completely dead or main earth strap failed

Quick fixes you can try

1. Clean the battery terminals (white powder = corrosion) with a wire brush 2. Wiggle the battery clamps — they're often loose 3. Try a jump start from another car or a jump pack 4. If the car starts but won't restart later, the battery needs replacing

UK costs in 2026

- New battery (standard 60Ah): £85–£140 fitted - AGM start-stop battery: £150–£280 fitted - Starter motor: £180–£400 fitted - Alternator (if battery keeps going flat): £220–£500 fitted

How long does a car battery last in the UK? — Typically 4–6 years. Start-stop AGM batteries often only last 3–4 years in town driving.

Will jump-starting damage my car? — No, if done correctly (red to red, black to a chassis earth). Avoid jump-starting modern start-stop cars from a running donor vehicle — it can spike the electronics.
