ABS and traction control lights on together — UK fix

When ABS and traction control (ESP/ESC/DSC) lights come on together, both systems are sharing the same fault. 80% of the time it's a failed wheel speed sensor or a damaged ABS ring.

Most common UK causes

1. **Failed wheel speed sensor** — usually the rear, often after wading through deep water 2. **Damaged ABS reluctor ring** — common on Ford Fiesta, Focus, Vauxhall Astra rear hubs 3. **Corroded sensor connector plug** 4. **Low brake fluid** (also shows red brake light) 5. **Steering angle sensor needs calibration** (after a wheel alignment)

What to do

Don't panic — your normal brakes still work, but ABS and stability control are disabled. Drive gently to a garage. A diagnostic scan will pinpoint the exact wheel within minutes.

UK costs in 2026

- Wheel speed sensor + fitting: £90–£220 - ABS reluctor ring (often built into hub): £180–£380 per side - Steering angle calibration: £45–£90 - ABS pump/module replacement: £450–£1,200

Is it safe to drive? — Yes, but avoid emergency braking practice. In a panic stop the wheels may lock.

Will it fail the MOT? — Yes — both ABS and ESC warning lights are MOT failures.
