Loss of power on Vauxhall's 1.4 Turbo is almost always one of three things — a cracked intake manifold (very common), a split charge pipe, or stretched timing chain. Diagnose in this order to avoid wasted money. Most often seen on the 1.4 Turbo A14NET / B14NET (Astra J, Corsa E, Mokka, Adam S).

Why this happens on a Vauxhall

Vauxhall's A14NET 1.4 Turbo is fundamentally a good engine let down by a few well-documented weak points. The plastic intake manifold develops hairline cracks around the runners, drawing unmetered air — fuel trims go positive, the ECU pulls timing for safety and you get loss of power with P0171 stored. The charge pipes use weak spring clips that can't hold under boost. And like many modern chain engines, the timing chain stretches if service intervals are extended.

Affected models

  • Astra J 1.4 Turbo
  • Corsa E 1.4 Turbo
  • Mokka 1.4 Turbo
  • Adam S 1.4 Turbo
  • Insignia 1.4 Turbo (some variants)

Most likely causes, in order

  • Cracked plastic intake manifold (very common) (very common) — Replace with updated revised manifold or aftermarket reinforced version (around £140 part).. Typical UK cost £180–£380.
  • Split charge pipe or popped intercooler hose (very common) — Smoke-test → replace pipe + upgrade spring clips to stainless steel.. Typical UK cost £30–£180.
  • Stretched timing chain (common) — Full chain kit. Mandatory at 70,000+ miles with any timing-related code.. Typical UK cost £600–£1100.
  • Carbon-fouled inlet valves (direct injection) (common) — Walnut-shell induction clean — typically needed at 60,000 miles.. Typical UK cost £200–£400.
  • Failed wastegate actuator (occasional) — Actuator-only repair where available, otherwise turbo work.. Typical UK cost £320–£1100.

How we diagnose it

  1. Scan for codes — P0171 (lean), P0299 (boost), P0507 (idle), P0011/P0016 (timing chain).
  2. Smoke-test the intake manifold AND boost system — manifold cracks show as smoke wisps at the cracks.
  3. Visual inspection of intake manifold under the engine cover — visible hairline cracks are common.
  4. Pressure-test the boost system — listen for the pipe-pop on first boost.
  5. Check timing chain stretch on scan tool — cam vs crank deviation.
  6. Pull spark plugs and inspect — heavy carbon = walnut clean overdue.

Is it safe to drive?

Drivable but expect rough running and reduced power. Diagnose before any long journey. Urgency: medium.

Bob's workshop tip

The Vauxhall 1.4 Turbo intake manifold is the single most common loss-of-power cause we see at the workshop. Don't bother with a MAF clean as the first step — go straight to the smoke test. The aftermarket reinforced manifold (around £140 part) is a better long-term fix than the original Vauxhall plastic — the original part typically lasts 60,000–80,000 miles before cracking again.

Fault codes worth scanning for

  • P0299
  • P0507
  • P0011
  • P0016
  • P132B
