A 'tractor at idle' rough running on the Toyota 1.4 D-4D is the classic Denso injector failure — the copper sealing washers leak and combustion gas blowback carbons up the injector seat. Caught early it's a £150 fix; ignored it's a £600 head seat repair. Most often seen on the 1.4 D-4D 1ND-TV (Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso, iQ).
Why this happens on a Toyota
Toyota's 1.4 D-4D (the Toyota name for the PSA DV4 engine, shared with the 1.4 HDi 207/308) uses Denso common-rail injectors with copper sealing washers. As the washers age the seal weakens, hot combustion gas leaks past the injector, and over months it carbons up the injector bore in the head. You hear a distinct 'tick-tick-tick' at idle, often misdiagnosed as a tappet — it's actually combustion gas escaping past the injector seat. Left unfixed, the carbon damages the injector seat to the point that a new washer alone won't seal, and you need a specialist injector seat re-cut.
Affected models
- Yaris 1.4 D-4D (2002–2018)
- Auris 1.4 D-4D
- Corolla 1.4 D-4D
- Verso 1.4 D-4D
- iQ 1.4 D-4D
- PSA-shared in 207/308 1.4 HDi (similar diagnosis)
Most likely causes, in order
- Failed copper injector washers (blowback) (very common) — Replace all 4 copper washers as a set + careful re-torque to spec. £12 in parts, £150 labour.. Typical UK cost £60–£220.
- Carbon-damaged injector seat (washers left too long) (common) — Specialist injector seat cleaner + recut tool. If the head is too far gone, head removal is required.. Typical UK cost £320–£650.
- Failed Denso injector itself (flow rate drift) (occasional) — Injector flow test — replace as set if any are out of tolerance. Always reseal copper washers at the same time.. Typical UK cost £320–£1100.
- Cold-start glow plug failure (winter rough idle only) (common) — All 4 glow plugs replaced as a set + relay check.. Typical UK cost £80–£180.
How we diagnose it
- Listen at the injectors with a stethoscope — the tick-tick-tick at idle pinpoints which injector is leaking.
- Visual inspection: pull injector and look for black carbon ring around the seat. Black = blowback confirmed.
- Scan for codes — per-cylinder fuel correction codes point at injector drift.
- Glow plug check via scan tool — common winter false alarm.
- Compression test if no injector cause found.
Is it safe to drive?
Yes short-term, but the carbon damage to the head gets worse every week. Book the repair within a month. Urgency: medium.
Bob's workshop tip
If your Toyota 1.4 D-4D has the tractor idle, get the injector copper washers replaced ASAP — £150 today saves £500+ in head seat repairs in 6 months. Always replace all four as a set, never just the noisy one. After the repair, the engine should return to normal Toyota smoothness within a few hot/cold cycles.
