A 2–4 second rattle on cold-starting a Mini Cooper is the well-documented BMW/PSA-developed Prince engine timing chain tensioner failure. Same job, same risk as the BMW N47 — catch it early to avoid an engine rebuild.
A 2–4 second rattle on cold-starting a Mini Cooper is the well-documented BMW/PSA-developed Prince engine timing chain tensioner failure. Same job, same risk as the BMW N47 — catch it early to avoid an engine rebuild. Most often seen on the N12/N14/N16/N18 1.6 (Mini Cooper R55, R56, F55, F56).
Why this happens on a Mini
The Mini Cooper Prince engine (developed jointly with PSA, used in Peugeot/Citroen 1.6 THP too) uses a timing chain tensioner that loses oil pressure overnight. On startup the chain has slack, slaps the chain case, and you hear the rattle. Left unfixed the chain stretches, jumps a tooth, and the engine destroys itself. Mini extended chain warranties on R56 in many markets — always check.
Affected models
- Mini Cooper R56 (2006–2013)
- Mini Cooper S R56 (turbo N14/N18)
- Mini Cooper R55 Clubman
- Mini Cooper F55/F56 (early N14)
- BMW 116i E87 (same engine)
Most likely causes, in order
- Failed chain tensioner (oil pressure leak-down) (very common) — Updated tensioner. Always replace as a kit on high-mileage engines (tensioner + chain + guides).. Typical UK cost £380–£900.
- Stretched timing chain (caught late) (common) — Full chain kit — gearbox-out or engine-out depending on variant.. Typical UK cost £750–£1500.
- Failed Valvetronic eccentric shaft motor (occasional) — Often pairs with chain rattle — diagnose both together.. Typical UK cost £180–£850.
- Vacuum pump failure (sounds similar) (occasional) — Vacuum pump replacement — confirm with stethoscope before chain work.. Typical UK cost £220–£450.
How we diagnose it
- Time the rattle — over 2 seconds is action-required.
- INPA/ISTA: cam-to-crank deviation, over 6° = chain stretch.
- Check VIN for open Mini/BMW chain extended warranty campaigns.
- Stethoscope on vacuum pump vs chain cover — pinpoints source.
- Service history — extended intervals are the high-risk pattern.
Is it safe to drive?
Limited driving — book the repair within days, not weeks. Urgency: high.
Bob's workshop tip
Don't drive a knocking Mini Cooper — these engines are interference design and a snapped chain costs more than the car is worth on R56s now. Quote up the chain job at a BMW/Mini specialist (not a main dealer) for typically £700–£1,000 — well worth it to save the engine. And walnut-blast the inlet ports at the same time while access is open.
