Why this happens on a Ford
The DV6 engine uses a variable-geometry turbo whose vanes carbon up from EGR soot. As the vanes stick, the actuator can't move them to the commanded position — the ECU sees requested boost vs actual boost differ, throws P0299/P132B, and drops the engine into limp mode (typically 2,500 RPM cap). Combined with the well-known EGR carbon problem on this engine, you've got a 'two-fault' pattern that can be cured for £150–£250 if caught early, or £1,500+ if the turbo fails outright.

Most likely causes, in order
- Sticking VGT actuator on turbo (carbon fouling) (very common) — Manual actuator clean and exercise, or replace actuator only. Avoid full turbo if vanes are still mechanically sound.. Typical UK cost £80–£280.
- Carbon-blocked EGR valve and intake manifold (very common) — Strip and clean EGR + intake manifold. Common at 60,000+ mile intervals on UK short-trip cars.. Typical UK cost £150–£450.
- Split intercooler / charge pipe (common) — Smoke test reveals it instantly. Plastic elbows and rubber hoses go brittle.. Typical UK cost £30–£180.
- DPF blockage from short-trip use (common) — Forced regen, ultrasonic clean, or replacement. Always check pressure differential sensor too.. Typical UK cost £180–£950.
- Failed turbo (genuine bearing wear) (occasional) — Reman turbo with new core — buy from a reputable rebuilder, not a generic eBay seller.. Typical UK cost £700–£1500.
How we diagnose it
- Scan for codes — P0299 (underboost), P132B (boost control), P0401 (EGR low flow), P244A (DPF differential) is the classic stack.
- Smoke-test the intake from turbo outlet to inlet — finds split pipes immediately.
- Inspect the turbo actuator rod by hand (engine off) — should slide freely. Sticky = clean before anything else.
- Strip EGR valve and inspect — heavy carbon means a full clean is overdue.
- Live-data the requested vs actual boost on a road test — flat actual with high request = leak or vane problem.
- Check DPF soot mass on scan tool — over 28g and the regen cycle is overdue.
Is it safe to drive?
Yes in limp mode but performance is heavily restricted. Get diagnosed before any long journey. Urgency: medium.
Bob's workshop tip
Don't authorise a new turbo on a 1.6 TDCi until the EGR has been cleaned, the actuator has been freed off and the boost system smoke-tested. We've seen far too many cars at this garage with a £900 turbo fitted by another shop when the real fix was a £15 intercooler hose. Always demand a smoke test in writing before any turbo work.
