Why this happens on a Ford

Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost uses a belt-in-oil timing setup with a plastic water pump driven off the same wet belt. When the pump seal fails (very common from 60,000 miles onwards) coolant ends up in the sump and inside the cylinders on cold starts — that wet-fouls a plug and you get a rough idle that often clears once the engine warms up. The same engine is also sensitive to coil pack thermal failure and to GDI carbon build-up on the inlet valves after 80,000 miles.

Most likely causes, in order

  • Failed coil pack (cylinder 1 most often) (very common) — Swap suspect coil with a known good one — if misfire follows the coil, replace it. Always fit Motorcraft or Bosch OE.. Typical UK cost £35–£140.
  • Wet plug from leaking water pump (very common) — Belt-in-oil water pump and full wet belt service. Major job — but ignoring it can ruin the engine when the belt strips.. Typical UK cost £700–£1400.
  • Carbon build-up on inlet valves (GDI fouling) (common) — Walnut-shell blast or chemical induction clean — typically every 60,000–80,000 miles on direct-injection engines.. Typical UK cost £180–£380.
  • Faulty fuel injector (no spray pattern) (occasional) — Injector flow test off the car, replace as set if any are out of tolerance.. Typical UK cost £180–£520.
  • Vacuum leak (intake elbow split, PCV diaphragm) (common) — Smoke-test the intake — split elbow under the throttle body is the classic find.. Typical UK cost £25–£180.

How we diagnose it

  1. Scan for codes — P0301/P0302/P0303 = cylinder-specific misfire (start there). P0300 random misfire points at coolant ingress or fuel pressure.
  2. Pull each plug in turn and look for moisture, oil, or unusual fouling — a single wet plug on cyl 1 is the smoking gun for water pump failure.
  3. Pressure-test the cooling system — even a small loss with no visible leak = internal coolant loss into the sump.
  4. Check oil level on the dipstick — over-full or milky oil confirms water pump leak.
  5. Swap the cyl 1 coil to cyl 2 and re-test — if the misfire moves, it's the coil.
  6. Smoke-test the intake from MAF to inlet ports — quick and rules out vacuum leaks.

Is it safe to drive?

Only if you are sure it's a simple coil. Any suspicion of coolant in the oil — recover the car, do not drive. Urgency: high.

If this car is over 70,000 miles and the rough idle clears once warm — stop driving it. The coolant entering the sump destroys the wet belt, the belt strips, and the engine self-destructs. We see this exact failure pattern weekly. A £900 water pump + belt job now saves a £4,000+ engine replacement later.
