Loss of power on Audi 2.0 TDI is overwhelmingly the famous P2015 intake manifold flap fault, a blocked EGR/DPF, or a split boost pipe. Always check the cheap stuff first — a £15 hose can mimic a £700 turbo fault.
Loss of power on Audi 2.0 TDI is overwhelmingly the famous P2015 intake manifold flap fault, a blocked EGR/DPF, or a split boost pipe. Always check the cheap stuff first — a £15 hose can mimic a £700 turbo fault. Most often seen on the 2.0 TDI CR (A3 8P/8V, A4 B8/B9, A6 C7, Q3, Q5).
Why this happens on a Audi
VAG's 2.0 TDI CR (common-rail) engine uses a plastic intake manifold with internal swirl flaps. The plastic lever that drives those flaps cracks and breaks — once broken, the position sensor can't read flap position and the ECU stores P2015 with reduced power. The same engine suffers EGR carbon build-up from soot, DPF blockage from short trips, and split charge pipes. All four faults present as 'loss of power' and require different fixes.
Affected models
- A3 2.0 TDI (2008+)
- A4 2.0 TDI B8/B9
- A6 2.0 TDI C7
- Q3 2.0 TDI
- Q5 2.0 TDI
- VW/Skoda/Seat equivalents share this engine
Most likely causes, in order
- P2015 — intake manifold flap lever broken (very common) — Replace with updated reinforced intake manifold (post-TSB part). Aftermarket repair kits exist but are temporary.. Typical UK cost £320–£700.
- Carbon-blocked EGR / intake (very common) — EGR strip and clean + intake manifold walnut-blast. Plan this at 80,000-mile intervals on UK cars.. Typical UK cost £220–£550.
- Blocked DPF (common) — Force regen → ultrasonic clean → replacement only as last resort.. Typical UK cost £180–£1200.
- Split charge pipe / intercooler hose (common) — Smoke-test reveals it. Replace plastic pipes and rubber hoses.. Typical UK cost £40–£220.
- Failed turbo actuator / wastegate (occasional) — Actuator-only repair if available, otherwise turbo replacement.. Typical UK cost £320–£1600.
- Fuel injector failure (high-pressure rail) (occasional) — Injector test on a flow bench — replace as set if any are out of spec.. Typical UK cost £280–£1400.
How we diagnose it
- VCDS or VAG-specific scan — pull full code list. Key codes: P2015, P0299, P0401, P2002, P244A.
- Visual on intake manifold position — broken flap motor is often visible.
- Smoke-test the boost system before any turbo work.
- Read DPF soot mass via VCDS — over 28g needs attention.
- Inspect EGR for carbon — heavy build-up requires strip and clean.
- Live-data: requested vs actual boost on a road test in 3rd/4th gear.
Is it safe to drive?
Yes in limp mode but expect heavily reduced power. Get diagnosed before motorway use. Urgency: medium.
Bob's workshop tip
If you've got a 2.0 TDI with loss of power and a P2015 code stored — always fit the updated VW Group revised intake manifold (the part number ends in a higher letter than the original). Cheap aftermarket repair levers will fail again within 12 months. Same job done properly with the right part lasts the life of the car.
