The North Coast 500 has become Scotland's most famous road-trip — and its busiest. Done well, it's the journey of a lifetime. Done badly, it's a 516-mile traffic jam with diesel splashes. Here's what we tell every customer who pulls into the workshop before setting off.
Drive it anti-clockwise
Inverness → Black Isle → Wick → Durness → Ullapool → Applecross → Inverness. The anti-clockwise direction leaves the dramatic west coast (Applecross, Bealach na Bà, Torridon) for the second half, which is the right way around for both pacing and photography. You'll also be on the inside of single-track passing places more often, which is significantly easier in anything over 6 metres long.
Realistic timing
Five nights minimum, seven to ten ideal. Four days is achievable but you'll spend more time driving than enjoying. Plan no more than 80–100 miles of progress on west-coast days — the single-track sections eat hours, especially in a motorhome.
Fuel — plan it
Petrol stations thin out dramatically north of Ullapool. Refill at Inverness, Wick, Thurso, Durness, Ullapool and Lochcarron. Several stations close on Sundays. Carry a small reserve in a proper jerry can if your tank range is under 250 miles.
Bealach na Bà (Applecross pass)
The famous hairpin pass is signposted as unsuitable for caravans, learner drivers and large vehicles. Coachbuilt motorhomes over 6m really shouldn't attempt it — take the longer coastal route via Shieldaig instead. Campervans up to a VW T6/Transit Custom size handle it fine in dry conditions, but use low gears, stay off the brakes downhill, and pull over for oncoming traffic at the marked passing places — not between them.
Wild camping etiquette
Scotland's Outdoor Access Code allows responsible wild camping but it does not extend to large motorised vehicles parking up wherever they like. Use the formal aires at Achmelvich, Sango Sands, John O'Groats and Applecross; use NC500-friendly campsites; and never park overnight in lay-bys that residents use.
The slower stops worth making
Smoo Cave at Durness; the beach at Achmelvich; the harbour at Lochinver (and the pies at Lochinver Larder); the viewpoint above Ardvreck Castle; the gardens at Inverewe; the bookshop at Wick. Don't make it just a driving route.
Common questions
Can a 7m motorhome do the NC500? Yes, the main route is fine. Avoid Bealach na Bà and use the Shieldaig diversion. Add 30% to your estimated journey times for the single-track sections.
Best time of year? May, early June and September. July–August is busy and midge-heavy; winter is dramatic but several roads (and many facilities) close.
