It's the single most common question first-time buyers ask: do I want a campervan or a motorhome? There's no universally right answer, but there are right and wrong answers for your situation. Here's an honest comparison based on what we see come through the workshop.
Day-to-day usability
Campervans win. A VW T6 or Ford Transit Custom conversion will fit on a standard driveway, slip into multi-storey car parks (just), and double as a day-to-day vehicle when you're not touring. Motorhomes are weekend-and-holiday vehicles for most owners — too big to be your daily driver, too thirsty to use casually.
Living space
Motorhomes win, comfortably. Standing headroom, a separated washroom, a proper fridge and a dining area you can sit four around — none of those are realistic in most campervans without an elevating roof and a drive-away awning. If you tour for weeks at a time, the extra space pays you back daily.
Running costs
Insurance for a converted campervan is typically £400–£700/yr; a similar-spec motorhome is £600–£1,100. Fuel: a campervan does roughly 32–38 mpg; a coachbuilt motorhome more like 24–30. Servicing is broadly similar on the base mechanicals, but habitation checks and seal renewals cost more on motorhomes.
Resale value
Both hold value well by car standards. Factory-built VW conversions (California, Bilbo, Danbury) are the strongest resale performers in the UK market. A-class motorhomes depreciate faster than coachbuilts. Self-built campers depreciate the most, even when beautifully done.
Our honest take
If you want freedom for occasional weekends, school holidays and the odd music festival — campervan. If you want to take a fortnight in the Highlands with the family and not feel cramped — motorhome. If you're not sure, hiring one of each is by far the cheapest way to decide.

Can I sleep four in a campervan? Yes, with an elevating roof or a drive-away awning. Four adults sharing the inside of a fixed-roof campervan for a week gets old quickly — be honest with yourself before buying.
Which is easier to drive? Campervans, by a clear margin. Most modern motorhomes drive well, but the width, length, overhangs and wing-mirror visibility take getting used to.
