Why is my car losing coolant with no visible leak?

If the level drops but there is no puddle, the coolant is either evaporating from a pressurised pinhole leak, or it is going into the combustion chamber through a head gasket.

This one worries people, and rightly so — but the cause is a cheap plastic part far more often than it is a head gasket.

Where coolant goes when there is no puddle

A cooling system runs at 1.0 to 1.5 bar above atmospheric pressure once hot. At that pressure a pinhole far too small to drip will spray a fine mist that flashes straight to steam on a hot engine and leaves nothing behind but a faint chalky white or crusty orange stain. That is the commonest reason people insist there is no leak. The three other places coolant can vanish without a trace are: into the combustion chamber through a failing head gasket (burnt off and blown out of the exhaust), into the engine oil through the same route or a failed oil cooler, or out of a pressure cap that is no longer holding, venting vapour every time the engine gets hot.

The five-minute checks you can do yourself

With the engine stone cold, take the expansion tank cap off and look at the rubber seal — perished, swollen or flattened seals are a £10 to £25 part and a very common cause. Look inside the neck for a creamy, mayonnaise-like deposit; that means oil and coolant are mixing. Check the oil dipstick and the underside of the oil filler cap for the same emulsion. Pull the carpet up in the passenger footwell and feel for damp with a sweet smell — that is a leaking heater matrix. Then look along every hose, especially the plastic Y-pieces and thermostat housings, for white or orange crusty residue where the mist has dried.

The cheap causes, in order of how often Bob finds them

A tired expansion tank pressure cap. A hairline crack in the plastic expansion tank itself — they go brittle after eight to ten years and often only leak when hot and pressurised. A weeping water pump seal, which drips onto the belt cover and evaporates. A plastic thermostat housing or coolant flange, particularly on VAG and PSA engines, which warp and seep. A perished hose at a clip. And a radiator that has corroded through at the top seam. Between them these account for the clear majority of unexplained coolant loss, and they are all in the £80 to £450 fitted bracket, not four figures.

The expensive cause and how to confirm it

A head gasket failure between a water jacket and a cylinder lets coolant into the combustion chamber, where it is burnt off. The tells are: thick sweet-smelling white smoke that does not clear once the engine is warm, bubbles or a constant rising level in the expansion tank when the engine is running, an engine that overheats under load, coolant that smells of exhaust, and a misfire on start-up after standing. The reliable test is a combustion leak (block) test: a tester holding chemical fluid is held over the open expansion tank and changes colour from blue to yellow if exhaust gases are present in the coolant. Any competent garage can do it in ten minutes for £20 to £40, and it turns guesswork into a definite yes or no.

The test that finds the invisible leak

Ask for a cooling system pressure test. A hand pump replaces the expansion tank cap and pressurises the cold system to its rated figure, which is then held for fifteen minutes. If the gauge drops, there is a leak; if it holds, the loss is happening internally or through the cap. With the system pressurised cold, that fine mist becomes a visible drip and the source shows itself. A UV dye can be added for slow cases. Expect to pay £35 to £70 for a pressure test, and consider it the best money you can spend before anyone quotes you for a head gasket.

Real UK repair costs

Expansion tank cap: £10 to £30. Expansion tank: £70 to £180 fitted. Top or bottom hose: £60 to £140. Thermostat and housing: £140 to £320. Water pump: £250 to £600, and considerably more if it is cambelt-driven, in which case do the belt at the same time. Radiator: £220 to £500. Heater matrix: £350 to £900, because the dashboard usually has to come out. Head gasket on a four-cylinder: £700 to £1,600 including skimming the head and a full set of gaskets and bolts. That spread is exactly why a £40 block test before committing is worth doing.

What happens if you ignore it

Coolant is what keeps the cylinder head at a sane temperature. Let the level drop far enough and the head runs hot, distorts, and then you genuinely do have a head gasket job — plus a skim, and sometimes a cracked head that cannot be saved. Aluminium heads warp long before the temperature gauge reads properly, because the sender is sitting in coolant that is no longer there. If you are topping up more than once a month, treat it as urgent rather than an inconvenience.

Topping up correctly in the meantime

Use the right coolant type — mixing an OAT (usually pink or red) with an older silicate blue or green coolant can produce a sludge that blocks the radiator and heater matrix. If in doubt, check the handbook or ask the garage for the correct specification. Only ever remove the cap when the engine is cold. Fill to the MAX line on the tank, not to the brim, and run the engine with the heater on full to purge air locks. Plain water is fine for a genuine emergency but dilutes the corrosion inhibitor and the frost protection, so get it drained and refilled properly afterwards.

Is losing coolant always a head gasket? — No. Far more often it is a pinhole in a plastic hose union, a weeping water pump seal, a failing expansion tank cap or a hairline crack in the tank itself. Head gasket failure is the expensive minority.

How much coolant loss is normal? — Effectively none. A healthy sealed cooling system should not need topping up between services. Any repeat top-up is a fault worth finding.

Can I just keep topping it up? — Only as a short-term measure while you get it diagnosed. Running low on coolant risks warping the head, which turns a £200 job into a £1,200 one.

What does white smoke from the exhaust mean? — Thin white vapour on a cold morning is normal condensation. Thick, sweet-smelling white smoke that continues once warm points at coolant entering the cylinders — get it checked immediately.
