What does the oil pressure warning light mean?

A red oil pressure light means your engine is not getting enough oil pressure to lubricate its moving parts. Pull over and switch off immediately — driving even a mile further can wreck the bearings, camshaft and turbo.

Here's a quick, honest answer from a working UK mechanic — what causes it, what it costs to fix, and what to do next.

Can I drive with the oil light on if it is only flickering? — No. A flickering red oil light at idle is the classic sign of either very low oil or worn main bearings starting to lose pressure when hot. Stop, check the dipstick, and if topping up does not clear it, get it recovered — do not drive it.

Could it just be a faulty sensor? — Possibly, but never assume. Roughly 1 in 4 oil pressure faults Bob sees turn out to be the sensor — the other 3 are real. The only safe way to know is a mechanical pressure test before any parts are fitted.

Why did the light only come on at idle? — Worn bearings lose pressure first at hot idle because oil thins and the clearances are biggest. A pressure test at idle vs 2,500 rpm tells the story — if idle pressure is below 0.5 bar but 2,500 rpm is fine, the bottom end is on its way out.
