A steady amber engine light means drive gently and get it read within a few days. A flashing engine light means stop as soon as it is safe — you are actively damaging the catalytic converter.
This is the single most common question Bob gets asked on the phone, and the honest answer depends entirely on whether that light is sitting steady or flashing at you.
Steady light versus flashing light
A steady amber engine management light means the ECU has logged a fault and stored a code, but it does not consider the problem immediately destructive. You can normally drive on, gently, and get it read within a few days. A flashing or blinking light is a different animal entirely: it means the engine is misfiring badly enough to dump raw fuel into the exhaust. That unburnt fuel burns inside the catalytic converter and can melt it in a matter of miles. Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and get recovery. A cat is a £400 to £1,400 part — the difference between pulling over and pressing on is often exactly that much money.
What you should check before you do anything else
Three things take two minutes and solve a surprising number of engine lights. First, the fuel cap: if it was not clicked home after filling, the evaporative system detects a leak and lights the dash. Tighten it, and the light often clears after a few drive cycles. Second, the oil level — a low-oil condition can trigger timing and variable-valve faults. Third, whether anything changed just before it appeared: a cheap tank of fuel, a cold snap, a jump start, or a battery change can all set codes. If the car drives normally, has no smoke, no noise and no temperature rise, you are almost certainly in the steady-light, book-it-in category.
The faults that most often trigger it in the UK
On the cars Bob sees, the repeat offenders are: a lazy or failed oxygen (lambda) sensor, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a sticking EGR valve, a partially blocked DPF on a diesel doing short journeys, worn ignition coils or spark plugs on a petrol, a split turbo hose or intercooler pipe, and a faulty thermostat holding the engine below temperature. What it means for your MOT
An illuminated engine management light is an automatic MOT failure — it has been a major defect since May 2018. It does not matter whether the car drives perfectly or whether the underlying fault is trivial. The tester records the malfunction indicator lamp as on, and that is a fail. So if your MOT is coming up, getting the light read is not optional. Clearing the code the day before without fixing the fault does not work either: many systems need several drive cycles to complete their readiness monitors, and a tester can see the monitors are incomplete.

A proper diagnostic session — reading codes, checking live data and confirming the actual fault rather than just the code — is typically £45 to £90 at an independent garage, often refunded against the repair. Pull over and stop if the light is flashing, if it comes on alongside the temperature gauge climbing, the oil pressure light, or the battery light, if you smell fuel or burning, if the car has gone into limp mode with barely any power, or if there is any new knocking or rattling from the engine. Any of those combinations means continuing to drive risks turning a repair bill into a replacement engine. Recovery is cheaper than a rebuild every single time.

If the light is steady and the car feels completely normal: check the fuel cap and oil, drive it gently, avoid long motorway runs, and book a diagnostic within the week. If the car feels flat, is using more fuel, is smoking, or has gone into limp mode: get it looked at within a day or two, because those symptoms mean the fault is already affecting how the engine runs. If it is flashing: stop. That is the only one where waiting costs you serious money.
Will the engine management light clear itself? — Sometimes. If the fault was intermittent — a loose fuel cap, a one-off misfire, a sensor glitch in cold weather — the ECU will extinguish the light after roughly three clean drive cycles. The code stays stored in memory, so a garage can still see what happened.
Is it safe to drive to the garage with the engine light on? — If the light is steady and the car drives normally, yes — drive gently and keep the journey short. If it is flashing, or the car is in limp mode, do not drive it; arrange recovery.
