Working on EV and hybrid vehicles is not the same as working on a petrol car. The garage needs IMI Level 3 (or higher) high-voltage qualification, insulated tooling, a safe isolation procedure and somewhere to quarantine a damaged battery pack.

Ask what diagnostic platform they use, whether they can read individual cell data rather than just a generic state-of-health figure, and whether they can carry out manufacturer software updates or will need to refer you to a franchised dealer.

Questions to ask before booking

Who will actually work on the car, and are they HV-qualified? Is the traction battery warranty affected by having independent work done? Will a battery health report be issued in writing? What is the hourly rate, and is diagnostic time credited against the repair?

If the car is still inside its battery warranty period, confirm in advance which jobs must go through the manufacturer network to keep that cover intact.

Common checks to have carried out

Battery state-of-health and cell balance, high-voltage cable and connector condition, coolant condition on liquid-cooled packs, brake condition (regenerative braking means pads often seize before they wear out), tyre wear from the extra weight and instant torque, and 12V battery health — still the single most common cause of an EV refusing to start.

Charging faults are worth separating out: a car that will not charge at home is often a cable, RCD or home-charger issue rather than a vehicle fault.

What work should cost, and how to compare quotes

Labour rates vary a lot between independents, specialists and main dealers, and by region. Get two or three written quotes covering parts, labour and VAT, and make sure each one describes the same scope of work before comparing the numbers.

For any quote involving the traction battery, ask whether the fix is a module-level repair or a full pack replacement. The difference in price is enormous, and not every garage is equipped to do the former.
